louis-xvi-neoclassical-round-corner-table-ivory-painted-gilt-cane-shelf
Louis XVI Neoclassical Round Corner Table — Ivory Painted Top with Gilt Carvings & Cane Shelf

Design & Inspiration

There is a particular moment in European decorative history when the curving excess of Rococo gave way to something more disciplined — the straight-legged, symmetry-loving world of Louis XVI Neoclassicism. This round corner table captures that turning point with precision. The ivory-painted circular top, hand-rendered with a central floral bouquet medallion framed by gilt acanthus scrollwork, speaks directly to the painted furniture ateliers of late 18th-century Paris, where cabinetmakers began treating the table surface as a canvas rather than merely a working plane.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is constructed from solid pine, then shaped into four slender, tapering fluted legs — the unmistakable fingerprint of the Louis XVI vocabulary. Each leg is finished in a warm ivory lacquer and accented with gilt detailing at the capital and base, where acanthus-leaf carvings add textural weight without overwhelming the leg's elegant proportion. The apron beneath the circular top is the most heavily worked element of this piece: a continuous carved frieze of flower garlands, ribbon-tied swags, and foliate drops — all highlighted in burnished gold against the cream ground. The lower tier features a tightly woven cane shelf set within a gilt-edged circular frame, providing both visual balance and practical surface area. The painted top is finished by hand, with each floral element rendered individually in a warm palette of blush, gold, and ivory — a technique rooted in the French vernis Martin tradition of decorative painted furniture.

Dimensions & Details

This table is made to order — dimensions can be tailored to your space.
