5-Seat Louis XVI Barrel-Back Salon Sofa with Gilt Brass Mounts
Design Inspiration
Rooted in the refined elegance of the Louis XVI era, this 5-seat barrel-back sofa — known classically as a canapé en corbeille — captures the neoclassical spirit with its sweeping curved frame, symmetrical proportions, and restrained yet sumptuous ornamental language. Every curve and carved detail pays homage to the golden age of French court furniture, reimagined by Brass & Wood's Egyptian master craftsmen for the modern grand salon.
Materials & Finish
The solid wood frame is veneered with exquisitely hand-cut marquetry panels on the side wings, depicting floral and foliate motifs characteristic of the Louis XVI period. The frame is finished in a rich dark tone, beautifully offset by gleaming antique gold brass mounts — scrolled acanthus feet caps, corner rosettes, and a delicate floral crest at the top rail. The upholstery is executed in a pale sky-blue damask fabric with a tonal ivory floral repeat, lending an air of palatial lightness.
Craftsmanship
Each piece is entirely handcrafted in Egypt by Brass & Wood artisans trained in classical European joinery and gilding traditions. The marquetry inlay is set by hand, the brass mounts are individually cast and hand-finished in antique gold, and the upholstery is hand-stretched and hand-tacked for a flawless, wrinkle-free seat surface. Cabriole legs with brass sabots complete the silhouette with period-accurate grace.
Dimensions & Placement
With a generous width of approximately 205 cm, a depth of 62 cm, and a height of 96 cm, this sofa is scaled for a formal living room or grand reception space. It pairs magnificently with Louis XVI armchairs, gilded console tables, and ornate mirrors to create a fully cohesive classical salon ensemble.
