belle-epoque-oval-brass-photo-frame-floral-crest-foliate
Belle Époque Oval Brass Photo Frame with Floral Crest and Foliate Surround

Design & Inspiration

Set a portrait on a dressing table or console and this frame does something few objects manage: it makes the image inside feel like a painting worthy of a salon wall. The oval form — favored across the salons and boudoirs of late 19th-century Paris — gives the photograph a softness that a rectangular border simply cannot. Faithfully reproduced in the tradition of Belle Époque decorative metalwork, this frame draws from the design vocabulary of the 1880–1914 period, when Parisian ateliers treated even the smallest household object as an occasion for sculptural expression.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is cast in solid brass and finished in a warm gold tone that catches light evenly across its relief surfaces. At the crest, a compact cartouche of naturalistic blooms — roses and buds, modeled with close botanical attention — anchors the composition above the oval plate. From there, cascading branches of foliage and petals sweep down both sides in a flowing asymmetric movement that is the signature of the Belle Époque floral idiom. The base terminates in a low scrolled foot that stabilizes the piece on a flat surface, while a hinged easel strut at the rear allows it to stand upright on a table or desk. Every surface detail — petal edge, leaf vein, scroll terminus — is the result of hand-finishing after casting, giving the piece its three-dimensional depth.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 30 cm / Height: 40 cm
Material: Solid cast brass with gold-tone finish
Display: Integrated rear easel stand (freestanding) or wall-mountable
Suitable for: Portrait-orientation oval photograph or artwork insert

Handcrafted in Egypt

Each frame leaves the Brass & Wood workshop in Egypt only after passing through hand-finishing that refines every cast relief to its final crispness. The artisans who produce these pieces work within a tradition of decorative metalwork that values patience over speed — the kind of attention that shows in the difference between a petal that merely suggests a flower and one that names the variety. This is a replica that takes its source seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What material is the frame made from?

The frame is cast from solid brass and finished in your choice of gold tone.
