Louis XV Rococo Half-Tester Bed with Hand-Painted Floral Canopy & Gold Leaf Shell Crest
Design & Inspiration
There is a particular kind of room that announces itself before you have fully entered it — a room organized around a bed so architecturally complete it reads as furniture and interior design simultaneously. This Louis XV Rococo half-tester bed is precisely that statement. The arched canopy rises above the headboard like a proscenium, its teal-ground valance cascading in layers of tassel-trimmed fringe that catch and hold the light. A gilt shell crest crowns the crest rail — the unmistakable rocaille motif that defines the Louis XV vocabulary — flanked by hand-applied floral garlands painted in pale rose, wisteria, and ivory. The whole composition draws from the grand chambres of Versailles and the intimate boudoirs of the French aristocracy, where the bed was not merely furniture but a ceremonial object.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is constructed from solid pine, shaped and carved by hand before receiving multiple layers of an ivory-white painted finish with subtle antiqued distressing at the molding edges. The carved ornament — shell crest, acanthus-scroll side brackets, floral swag cartouches on the footboard, and cabriole legs with scroll feet — is executed in hand-formed resin appliqué over the wood substrate, then gilded in gold leaf. The canopy valance is fabricated from a hand-painted floral brocade ground in cream, with teal piped borders, layered fringe, and individual glass-bead tassels suspended at graduated lengths. The footboard carries its own composition: a full bouquet of hand-modeled flowers set into a gilt-framed panel above the carved skirt rail, with the same teal fringe continuing the visual rhythm from headboard to foot. Two matching nightstands, curved on cabriole legs with painted floral panel doors, complete the set.

Handcrafted in Egypt
Every element of this bed is produced in Egypt by craftsmen trained in the European classical tradition. The painted floral panels are rendered by hand — no two will be identical. The gold leaf gilding on the carved ornament is applied by brush in multiple passes, burnished to the warm, slightly matte tone characteristic of 18th-century French ébéniste work. Brass & Wood's production cycle for pieces of this complexity runs 60–75 days from order confirmation, ensuring each bed receives the attention the design demands. Customization of fabric colorway, painted panel motif, and finish tone is available on request.
