Rococo Crystal & Brass Ashtray with Acanthus Pedestal Base

Design & Inspiration

Few decorative objects command a room's attention the way this handcrafted crystal and brass ashtray does. Rooted in the exuberant vocabulary of Rococo design — that magnificent 18th-century European movement that celebrated curvilinear grace, natural motifs, and gilded excess — this piece transforms a functional object into a work of decorative art. Whether displayed on a mahogany side table in a formal salon or gracing a reception desk, it carries the visual weight of a European collector's cabinet piece.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The bowl is fashioned from deeply etched crystal, its surface alive with an all-over floral and foliate relief pattern that catches and refracts light with every shift in angle. The rim is encircled by a cast brass appliqué featuring sinuous acanthus scrolls — one of the defining motifs of classical European ornament — rendered with crisp, high-relief definition. The pedestal base is a masterwork in its own right: a flared, openwork brass casting populated with upright acanthus leaves, each petal undercut and modeled with the confidence of a skilled foundry artisan. The two elements are joined at a central brass knop, completing a composition of satisfying structural hierarchy.
