Design & Inspiration

Place this commode against any wall and the room reorganises itself around it. The swelling bombé silhouette — that dramatic outward curve from waist to foot that defined the finest French cabinet-making of the 1730s to 1760s — commands the eye before a single detail is examined. Two serpentine drawer fronts sweep across the full width, their surfaces entirely consumed by a dense field of floral marquetry: a central flower basket rises from a parquetry-chequered ground, ringed by scrolling vine tendrils, open blooms, and naturalistic leaves rendered in contrasting light and dark veneers. This is a faithful reproduction in the grand tradition of the Louis XV bombé commode, the form that Parisian ébénistes perfected and that courts across Europe spent the following century attempting to equal.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is constructed from solid pine — dimensionally stable timber chosen for its resistance to the seasonal movement that is the enemy of precision marquetry. Over this foundation, the craftsmen have applied a full-coverage floral marquetry in the Louis XV manner: each petal, leaf, and tendril individually cut and fitted, the tonal contrast between the rosewood-toned field veneer and the lighter inlay woods creating depth and shadow without paint or gilding. The shaped top is finished in genuine brown-veined marble — its warm, mottled surface following the serpentine profile of the carcass exactly, with no compromise at the corners. Gilt brass ormolu mounts in cast relief anchor the composition: scrolled cartouche pulls on each drawer face, acanthus-leaf corner mounts that wrap the front angles, and delicate gilt sabots at the foot of each slender cabriole leg. The drawer interiors are lined in warm maple veneer and run on hand-fitted wooden runners — a detail that speaks to the quality of the joinery beneath the decorative surface.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every commode in the Brass & Wood atelier passes through the hands of specialist craftsmen: the marquetry cutter, the veneer layer, the brass caster, the polisher. Egypt has sustained a tradition of classical European furniture reproduction since the nineteenth century, when Khedival patronage brought French and Italian master craftsmen to Cairo. This piece carries that lineage forward — made in Egypt, faithful to France, built to last a generation in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is this made from?

The frame is solid pine with full floral marquetry veneer in contrasting wood tones. The top is genuine brown-veined marble shaped to the serpentine profile. All hardware is cast gilt brass in the ormolu tradition.

Is assembly required?

Minimal assembly is required — typically attaching the marble top and fitting the drawer pulls, both of which require no specialist tools.

Can this be customised?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customisation of the marble colour, brass finish tone, and veneer palette. Contact our team before ordering to discuss bespoke options.
