Louis XVI Neoclassical Mahogany Side Table with Gilt Bronze Swag Mounts
Design & Inspiration
Set this table in a room and it immediately establishes the decorative register. Three gilt bronze swag garlands drape across its apron — the central cartouche mounded with ribbons, husks, and floral clusters, the flanking panels holding twin torch-and-ribbon drops — while gold-banded collars cap each of the four straight, finely fluted legs. This is the language of the Louis XVI court: symmetry as a moral statement, ornament as controlled poetry.
Faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the Parisian menuisiers who supplied the royal Garde-Meuble during the 1770s–1790s, this side table draws from the design vocabulary of the period when French furniture shed Rococo's asymmetric exuberance in favour of strict classical order. The straight tapered leg — fluted in the manner of a Doric column — is the single most telling fingerprint of the Louis XVI era, and here it is executed with the precision the period demands.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The table body is constructed from solid mahogany, seasoned to resist seasonal movement, then built up with successive coats of French polish — a finish that creates the deep, warm luminosity characteristic of late 18th-century Parisian court pieces. The surface's figured grain catches light across its shallow curves in a way that lacquer or varnish simply cannot replicate.
The gilt bronze mounts are cast and chased by hand, then finished in a rich warm gold tone. The swag garlands — known in period nomenclature as draperies or guirlandes — were a defining motif of the Louis XVI decorative programme, symbolising festivity and abundance. Each mount is individually fitted and secured, sitting flush against the mahogany ground to read as part of a single, unified composition. The brass collars at the leg capitals and the small gilt sabots at the feet complete the metalwork vocabulary from top to toe.

Handcrafted in Egypt
Every piece bearing the Brass & Wood name is handcrafted in our Cairo atelier by craftsmen trained in European classical joinery and decorative finishing. The mahogany frame is joined using traditional mortise-and-tenon construction. The French polish is applied by hand in multiple sessions, rubbed back between coats to achieve the characteristic depth of finish. The gilt bronze mounts are fitted individually after polishing. This is not production-line furniture — it is a faithfully reproduced piece of decorative art, made with care and intended to last.
