Design & Inspiration

Place this set in a room and a kind of order settles over it — the largest table commanding attention with its elliptical gallery-railed top, its three nested companions ready to slide out with the quiet efficiency of well-designed things. This is a set of four nesting tables drawn from the Louis XVI Neoclassical tradition (1760–1800), a period when French craftsmen turned away from Rococo exuberance and rediscovered the disciplined grace of antiquity. The result, here faithfully reproduced, is a set that manages to be both supremely practical and visually authoritative.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The largest table's top is the centerpiece: an oval form edged by a pierced brass gallery rail with Greek key (méandre) detailing — a motif that defines Neoclassical ornament. Within that frame, hand-laid marquetry unfolds across the entire surface: floral sprays of roses, tulips, and leaves in multiple tonewoods, all radiating from a central medallion with the precision that only patient handwork achieves. The three subordinate tables carry scaled versions of the same floral marquetry, maintaining visual coherence across the set. All four tables rest on tapered, reeded (fluted) legs in a deep dark-brown finish — the hallmark leg form of the Louis XVI period — terminating in small antique-gold brass sabots that lift the feet off the floor with characteristic elegance. Brass corner mounts accent the apron junctions on each table, providing both structural reinforcement and decorative punctuation.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 75 cm / Depth: 40 cm / Height: 53 cm (largest table). The three nesting tables graduate in scale, each sliding cleanly beneath the one above. Wood species: Cedar. Finish: French polish over floral marquetry veneer. Hardware: antique-gold brass gallery rail, corner mounts, and sabot feet. Country of Origin: Egypt.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Each table in this set is individually made by the craftsmen of Brass & Wood in Egypt, working in the tradition of European marquetry ateliers. The floral inlay is hand-cut and hand-laid — no two sets are identical in the precise arrangement of the wood grain. The brass gallery rail is cast and pierced by hand, then fitted to the elliptical table edge with close tolerances. This is the kind of work that cannot be rushed, which is why delivery is scheduled at 45–60 days from order confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are these tables made from?

The frames and legs are constructed from solid cedar wood. The table tops feature hand-laid floral marquetry in multiple tonewoods over a solid wood substrate, finished with French polish. The gallery rail, corner mounts, and sabot feet are antique-gold brass.

Is assembly required?

Minimal assembly is required — the tables are delivered largely pre-assembled, with only the sabot feet and any protective packaging fixtures to be fitted on arrival.

Can this set be customized?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customization on wood finish, brass hardware color, and marquetry pattern. Contact our team to discuss bespoke options before placing your order.
