Empire Burr Marquetry Demi-Lune Console - Gilt Ormolu Acanthus Mounts
Design & Inspiration
There is a particular authority that a demi-lune console carries in an entrance hall — the half-moon silhouette pressing against the wall with quiet confidence, commanding the space without crowding it. This piece draws from the design vocabulary of the French Empire period (1800–1830), the moment when Napoleon's court demanded furniture of uncompromising grandeur: dark grounds, gilded mounts, and architectural structure borrowed from Roman antiquity. The result is a console that does not merely stand in a room — it anchors it.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The demi-lune top is veneered in richly figured burr wood — the swirling, flame-like grain characteristic of root-cut marquetry — framed by a precise ivory-and-ebony stringing that traces the arc of the half-moon and defines the apron below. The apron itself is articulated with a continuous band of gilded ormolu-style acanthus leaf relief, punctuated at intervals by raised square rosette panels in a darker wood ground, each catching the light at a slightly different angle. Four tapered, ebonized legs rise from gilt acanthus capital collars and are banded at mid-shaft and at the foot with crisp white rings, a classical column reference drawn directly from the Percier and Fontaine Empire canon. The legs are united by a gently curved X-stretcher, its center marked by a cast gilt urn finial — the Empire's preferred symbol of Neoclassical restraint. All carved and cast elements are handcrafted from Romanian solid redwood (under 10% humidity) with a high-gloss lacquered finish that deepens the contrast between ebonized black and the warm amber of the burr top.

Handcrafted in Egypt
Every element of this console — from the matched burr veneer on the top to the hand-applied gilt acanthus relief on the apron — is produced by Brass & Wood's workshop artisans in Egypt, working in the tradition of the great European ébénistes of the early nineteenth century. The piece is inspected at every stage of production to ensure that the joinery, gilding, and surface finish meet the standard that the Empire period itself demanded: nothing superfluous, nothing imprecise.
