Louis XV Rococo Gilded Fauteuil Armchair - Forest Green Paisley Velvet
Design & Inspiration
Place this chair in a room and the room acquires a focal point. The antiqued gold-leaf frame rises from four outward-scrolling cabriole legs, carries a serpentine apron anchored by a carved central rosette, and arrives at a cartouche-shaped back crowned by a shell-and-scroll crest rail. The forest green cut velvet, patterned in large-scale paisley, gives the gilded woodwork something to play against — warmth against depth, gold against the dark richness of a colour the eighteenth century associated with formal luxury. This is a Louis XV / French Rococo fauteuil faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the great Parisian menuisiers who furnished the salons of Versailles.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is built from Romanian solid redwood dried to below ten percent humidity, then passed to carvers who work the crest rail, the serpentine apron, the arm terminals, and the knees of the front cabriole legs before any finish is applied. The gold leaf is laid by hand over a prepared gesso ground and then selectively burnished and distressed to produce the warm, aged patina visible in the photographs — brighter on the high points of the carving, softer in the recesses. The open arms carry padded armrest pads upholstered in the same paisley velvet as the body of the chair. The loose box seat cushion and the separate loose back cushion are both filled with high-density foam, cut to the shaped outline of the seat and back panels so they sit without shifting.
Dimensions & Details
Width: 70 cm / Depth: 83 cm / Height: 100 cm. Four cabriole legs with outward-scrolling feet, the front pair with carved knees, provide the chair's characteristic lightness and poise. The back panel is fully upholstered on both the interior and exterior faces, with piping on the inside back. The fabric is a forest green cut velvet woven in a large-scale paisley pattern; the pile depth creates a two-tone effect as the chair is viewed from different angles. No cane work, nailhead trim, or metal mounts are used anywhere on this piece.
Handcrafted in Egypt
Every element of this fauteuil is produced by hand in the Brass & Wood workshops in Egypt, where cabinet-makers and gilders trained in classical European joinery work alongside upholsterers who understand the shaped, fitted forms of eighteenth-century seating. The combination of Romanian solid redwood, hand-applied gold leaf, and hand-cut velvet upholstery represents a standard of craft that mass production cannot replicate. Customisation of fabric colour or finish is available — contact Brass & Wood directly to discuss options.
