Napoleon III Rococo Revival Marquetry Corner Table - Floral Inlay Top with Gilt Column Legs
Design & Inspiration
Place this table at the side of a formal salon sofa and the eye goes straight to the top — a centrepiece medallion of hand-inlaid floral marquetry, ringed by scrolling arabesque borders, all rendered in warm honey-toned and burgundy veneers against a golden ground. This is Napoleon III Rococo Revival at its most confident: opulence that has been organised, decoration that has been disciplined. The Second Empire (1852–1870) was the last great moment when Parisian luxury became a public statement, and this corner table distils that ambition into a single 60 cm square surface. The four column legs, faced in deep burgundy panels and dressed with cascading gilt acanthus mounts, capitals, and foliate sabots, carry the same vocabulary downward — nothing is left unattended.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The table is built from a solid wood core with hand-cut marquetry veneers, ensuring dimensional stability in the varied climates of the Middle East and Mediterranean. The top surface showcases hand-cut marquetry: individual veneers of contrasting tones are fitted piece by piece to form the central floral bouquet medallion and the surrounding foliate scroll borders. A French polish finish — applied in multiple hand-rubbed coats — gives the surface its characteristic depth and the faint luminosity that distinguishes hand-finished wood from any mechanically sprayed alternative. The carved acanthus ornaments on the apron and legs are gilded with antique gold leaf, their relief work catching light from every angle. The legs themselves follow the Second Empire columnar tradition: square-sectioned, tapering gently, with applied burgundy lacquer panels framed by gilt mouldings, and crowned with acanthus capitals that ease the transition from apron to shaft.

Handcrafted in Egypt
Every element of this table is produced by hand in Egypt by craftsmen working within a tradition of classical European reproduction furniture. The marquetry cutting, the carving, the gilding, and the French polishing are all performed by individual artisans — no two tables will be precisely identical. Brass & Wood oversees each stage of production to ensure that the faithfulness of the reproduction matches the ambition of the original Second Empire design. Customisation of veneer colours, gilding tone, and leg finish is available on request.
