The silhouette is unmistakably transitional: the legs retain a gentle outward splay reminiscent of late Rococo but are squared and tapered — a hallmark of the emerging Louis XVI sensibility. The half-moon plan focuses the piece firmly toward the wall, turning the richly inlaid top into a picture rather than a surface.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The top is veneered in a dense floral marquetry composition — scrolling acanthus stems, blooming flower heads, and leafy reserves arranged around a central cartouche — executed in contrasting fruitwood and tulipwood veneers against a mahogany ground. The drawer front carries its own marquetry panel, ensuring that even the functional element reads as ornament. The mahogany body is finished in a deep French polish that amplifies the warmth of the wood grain without obscuring it. Throughout the apron and shelf, cast ormolu mounts — floral garland swags tied with ribbon bows, foliate corner cartouches, and figural drop pendants at the leg heads — are gilded to a warm 24-carat tone and applied with precision. The lower tier features a pierced gilt gallery rail, its repeating trefoil cutouts forming a delicate balustrade that protects displayed objects while maintaining visual lightness. The single dovetail-fitted drawer is lined in deep burgundy velvet, evidence of the same care applied to details the owner sees only in private.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 85 cm / Depth: 34 cm / Height: 80 cm
Shelf: 1 lower open shelf with gilt pierced gallery rail
Drawer: 1 velvet-lined centre drawer
Wood: Romanian Solid Redwood (<10% Humidity)
Finish: French Polish
Mounts: Cast gilt ormolu
Inlay: Floral marquetry in fruitwood and tulipwood veneers

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this console — from the hand-cut marquetry veneers laid piece by piece to the individually cast and chased ormolu mounts — is produced by master craftsmen at the Brass & Wood atelier in Egypt. The French polish is applied by hand in multiple sessions, each coat burnished before the next is laid, producing the glassy depth that no spray lacquer can replicate.
