Design & Inspiration

Place this table beside a salon chair and the room finds its centre of gravity. The round travertine top catches the light with the quiet authority of stone that has been worked — not merely cut — and the gilt frame beneath it frames every angle like a piece of portable architecture. This is a guéridon in the true Louis XVI tradition: small in footprint, large in presence, designed to occupy exactly as much space as it deserves.

The Louis XVI / Neoclassical period (1760–1800) represented a deliberate turn away from the playful asymmetry of the Rococo. Court designers and their patrons reached instead toward ancient Greece and Rome for a vocabulary of order, symmetry, and restrained ornament. Every element on this table reflects that intention: the straight, tapered, fluted legs that recall classical columns; the rope-twist (torsade) apron that runs unbroken around the entire circumference; and the carved floral medallion blocks at each leg junction — a motif drawn directly from the Neoclassical decorative vocabulary codified in the ateliers of Paris.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is hand-carved from solid pine, a dense, stable timber that holds fine detail without splitting over time. The carved rope-twist frieze around the apron is executed in continuous relief — a demanding technique that requires the carver to maintain consistent depth and rhythm across the full curve of the circular frame. The fluted legs taper to turned button feet, each flute aligned with geometric precision. The gilt finish — warm and slightly antiqued rather than brash — ties the carved surface together and gives the piece its characteristic glow under both natural and artificial light. The travertine marble top, with its characteristic cream-and-sand veining, is set into the frame rather than simply rested on it, a detail that speaks to the quality of construction.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every table is produced by hand in our Egyptian workshops, where craftsmen trained in the European classical tradition work with the same joinery techniques and carving methods that defined the original Louis XVI ateliers. The result is a faithful interpretation of Neoclassical design — not a mass-produced approximation, but a piece that rewards close inspection. Brass & Wood produces each order individually, which means customization in finish, marble choice, and scale is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is this made from?

The frame is hand-carved from solid pine with an antiqued gold finish. The top is natural travertine marble, set into the carved frame. No veneers or composite materials are used in the frame construction.

Is assembly required?

Minimal assembly is required — typically attaching the legs to the apron frame. Full instructions are included, and the process requires no specialist tools.

Can this be customized?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customization in marble type and color, frame finish (gold, antique gold, painted, or other finishes), and overall scale. Contact us before placing your order to discuss your requirements.
