Régence Mahogany Demi-Lune Console - Gilded Egg-and-Dart Apron & Arched Mirror
Design & Inspiration
A hallway changes the moment this console takes its place against the wall. The arched mirror rises above a demi-lune table whose every surface has been shaped by hand — the mahogany frame warming to a deep amber-brown, the cream marble top catching whatever light enters the room, the gilded egg-and-dart frieze running the full length of the apron like a sentence written in gold. This is a piece drawn from the Régence period (1715–1730), that brief, fertile moment when French furniture shed the rigid grandeur of Louis XIV and began its graceful journey toward the playfulness of the Rococo — still architectural in its bones, but newly alive in its ornament.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is built from Romanian solid redwood (below 10% humidity), worked to a French polish finish that gives the mahogany its characteristic depth and warmth. Every carved element — the bold acanthus leaves erupting at the shoulder of each cabriole-style leg, the scrolled volutes at the leg capitals, the continuous egg-and-dart motif along the apron and mirror frame, the turned acorn finial at the centre of the X-stretcher — has been cut by hand and finished with selective gilding that catches the light at every angle. The demi-lune top is dressed in cream Crema Marfil marble, its quiet veining providing contrast against the richness of the carved wood below. The matching arched mirror, framed in the same carved and gilded surround, amplifies the light in the room and completes the ensemble as it would have appeared in a Parisian hôtel particulier of the early eighteenth century.
Dimensions & Details
Width: 105 cm / Depth: 45 cm / Height: 100 cm (console table) — mirror height additional. The demi-lune footprint sits flush against the wall, with a shallow 45 cm depth that keeps the hallway clear. The four swept legs are joined by a double-scroll X-stretcher centred on a carved acorn finial — a structural detail that also reads as decoration from every angle in the room.
Handcrafted in Egypt
This console and mirror set is produced at the Brass & Wood workshop in Egypt, where craftsmen trained in European classical techniques work the wood by hand from raw timber to finished piece. The gilded detailing is applied by brush after carving, following the Régence convention of selective gilding that highlights ornament without overpowering the natural warmth of the wood. Each piece is inspected for dimensional accuracy and finish quality before dispatch. Customisation of marble colour, wood finish, and gilding tone is available on request.
