Design & Inspiration

Place this bergère in a room and the geometry announces itself immediately: the rectangular back framed in a crisp egg-and-dart border, the two fluted column posts at the front of the arms rising to carved leaf capitals and small finials, the carved rosette corner blocks above each front leg. This is Louis XVI Neoclassical furniture in its most disciplined form — a closed-arm bergère that draws its authority from proportion and carved detail rather than from Rococo flourish. The antique-white painted frame carries a warm rubbed patina on every carved surface, so the piece reads as aged without pretending to be old. The plain light blue velvet upholstery completes the composition with a colour that is cool without being cold.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is hand-carved Romanian solid redwood — chosen for its tight grain and dimensional stability — finished in an antique-white painted ground with a hand-rubbed warm tan patina worked into the carving to bring out the relief. The egg-and-dart frieze runs continuously around the back frame and along the front and side seat rails, a motif borrowed directly from classical architecture and a hallmark of the Louis XVI vocabulary. The arm posts are turned and fluted columns, each capped with a carved acanthus-leaf capital and a turned finial, sitting above a carved rosette corner block. The upholstery is plain light blue velvet, close-cut and smooth, applied with piped seams throughout — back panel, arm pads, seat cushion, and side panels all finished consistently. Two loose scatter cushions are included: one in a pale grey textured chenille, one in the light blue velvet, both piped to match.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 66 cm / Depth: 66 cm / Height: 105 cm. The seat height and depth provide comfortable support for extended sitting. The closed arm construction of the bergère form means the upholstered side panels enclose the seat completely, a feature that originated in the French court to allow sitters to be at ease for hours. Upholstery is plain light blue velvet with piped seams. The loose seat cushion and two scatter cushions are removable. Frame finish: antique-white painted with hand-rubbed patina. Leg style: four fluted tapered turned legs. No brass or metal mounts.

Handcrafted in Egypt

This bergère is crafted entirely by hand in Brass & Wood's Egyptian workshops, faithfully reproducing the tradition of Louis XVI neoclassical joinery — from the frame assembly using mortise-and-tenon joints to the hand-carving of every egg, dart, and column flute. Egyptian master craftsmen working within this tradition bring the same rigour to the carving and painted finish that the original court ébénistes brought to their work in the 1760s–1790s. The result is a chair that carries the visual authority of the period while being sized, finished, and proportioned for a contemporary room.
