Louis XVI Neoclassical Oval Coffee Table with Natural Onyx Top & Gilt Carved Frame
Design & Inspiration
Set this table before a silk-upholstered canapé and the room shifts register entirely. The oval onyx top — ivory white washed through with rivers of amber and caramel — catches afternoon light in the way only natural stone can, each viewing angle revealing a different composition. Below it, the gilt frame holds its own authority: a continuous laurel-leaf frieze encircling the apron, corner rosettes anchoring the transitions, and four slender reeded legs tapering to turned feet. This is the Louis XVI vocabulary at its most disciplined — ornament in service of proportion, never overwhelming it.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The apron is hand-carved from solid pine, a timber chosen for its dimensional stability and its ability to hold fine detail across deep relief carving. The continuous leaf-and-dart moulding along the apron edge is cut by hand, each leaf individually shaped. The legs are classically reeded — shallow vertical channels running the full length — and terminate in turned collars above tapered feet, a detail lifted directly from the menuisiers of late 18th-century Paris. The gilt finish is applied in the antiqued gold tradition: warm, slightly muted, with the carved high points catching the light more brightly than the recessed ground. The onyx top is a slab of natural stone, its veining unique to this piece — no two tables will be identical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the top material, and is it sealed?
The top is natural onyx stone — a translucent, semi-precious variety with characteristic amber and cream veining. It is sealed with a penetrating stone sealer at the workshop. We recommend resealing annually and avoiding acidic liquids directly on the surface.
Is the gilding real gold?
The frame is finished in a high-quality antiqued gold leaf gilding over a gesso base, applied in the traditional European manner. It is not solid gold, but the finish closely replicates the warmth and depth of period water-gilded pieces.
Can this table be customized in size or finish?
Yes. Brass & Wood offers customization of dimensions, gilding tone (bright gold, antique gold, silver), and alternative stone tops. Contact us with your specifications and we will provide a tailored quote within 48 hours.
