Pure Napoleon III opulence: an oval Dutch flower piece — tulips, peonies and poppies in the old-master manner — rings in a gilt bezel, floated on a field of deep burgundy velvet. Around it, a shaped frame erupts in rose-carved corners and a full floral crest. A tableau in the literal sense: painting, textile and sculpture in one object.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The shaped chassis is wood with resin-cast ornament, gilded and burnished by hand; the velvet mat is stretched taut; the oval bezel is beaded gold. Three crafts meet in one wall piece.
