Some pieces of furniture announce themselves the moment you enter a room. This demi-lune console table — its half-moon form pressed gently against a wall — does exactly that. The eye is drawn first to the radiant starburst marquetry medallion at the centre of the top, then along the book-matched veneer panels that fan outward in warm cherry tones, and finally down the slender cabriole legs to their gilt bronze sabots. It is a piece that rewards a second look, and a third.

Faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the French Transition period (c. 1760–1780), this console occupies the eloquent middle ground between the exuberance of Rococo and the discipline of Neoclassicism. The cabriole leg — still present, still graceful — has begun to straighten with purpose. The apron is curved but controlled. The ormolu mounts, rather than asymmetric Rococo cartouches, carry a more composed vocabulary: a central winged trophy mount on the drawer face, pendant floral husks at the corners, and a gilt gallery rail along the top edge that would not be out of place in a Parisian hôtel particulier.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The carcass is built from solid pine at less than 10% humidity — a foundation that resists the warping and shrinkage that defeats lesser construction. Over it, craftsmen have laid carefully selected veneers in a herringbone field pattern, interrupted at the top by a hand-cut floral marquetry medallion composed of contrasting fruitwood species. The surface is finished to a deep French polish, a technique that builds up layer upon layer of shellac by hand — the only finish that produces that interior luminosity, as though the wood is lit from within. The gilt bronze hardware is cast and chased individually: the central drawer mount, the corner pendants, and the sabots that sheath each leg foot.
