empire-demi-lune-console-burr-walnut-gilt-ormolu-mounts
Empire Burr Veneer Demi-Lune Console - Gilt Ormolu Acanthus Frieze

Design & Inspiration

There is a particular authority that comes from placing a demi-lune console against a grand entrance wall — the half-moon silhouette sits flush, the gilded frieze catches the light, and every visitor's eye is drawn to it before they have taken three steps inside. This console, faithfully reproduced in the tradition of French Empire cabinetmaking at its most confident, carries that authority naturally. The piece draws from the design vocabulary of the Consulate and early Empire periods (1800–1830), when French ébénistes under the influence of Percier and Fontaine turned the console table into an architectural statement rather than merely a surface.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The demi-lune top is veneered in richly figured burr wood — its swirling, flame-like grain catching light from every angle — bordered by a crisp white stringing line that separates the field from a dark ebonized edge. The apron below is dominated by a continuous cast gilt ormolu acanthus-leaf frieze, punctuated at intervals by raised square paterae in a warm walnut ground, each framed in gold. Four cylindrical legs, ebonized to a deep gloss black, rise from delicate gilded acanthus-leaf sabots and are capped at the shoulder with full gilded acanthus capitals — a direct reference to the Roman column vocabulary that Napoleon's designers made their own. The legs are connected by a curved X-stretcher finished in ebonized black with white ring detailing, centred by a cast gilt urn finial — a signature Empire motif that completes the architectural coherence of the base.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 150 cm / Depth: 50 cm / Height: 90 cm
The 150 cm width gives the piece genuine presence on an entrance or salon wall without overwhelming a standard room. At 50 cm deep, it sits close to the wall while allowing a lamp, tray, or decorative objects above. The 90 cm height aligns perfectly with standard hallway mirror hanging height, making it an ideal foundation for a paired wall mirror. Wood species: Romanian Solid Redwood (<10% Humidity). Country of origin: Egypt.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this console is produced by hand in the Brass & Wood workshops in Egypt — the burr veneer is laid and polished by trained craftsmen, the ormolu mounts are individually cast and gilded, and the ebonized column legs are turned on traditional lathes before receiving their high-gloss lacquer finish. This is a faithful interpretation of Neoclassical Empire craftsmanship, not a mass-produced replica — the difference is visible in the precision of the acanthus carving and the depth of the gilding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is this console table made from?

The frame and legs are constructed from Romanian solid redwood with an ebonized high-gloss lacquer finish.
