Knole Damask Skirted Sofa - Antique Gold Pinecone Finials
Design & Inspiration
The Knole settee is one of the most recognisable forms in English furniture history. Named for Knole House in Kent — one of England's great country houses, dating to the early 17th century — it is defined by its straight raised sides that stand level with the back, transforming the sofa into an almost architectural enclosure. This piece faithfully reproduces that noble form: four corner posts crowned with antique-gold pinecone finials, a fixed deeply upholstered back and sides, a single loose seat cushion, and a generous bullion-and-tassel fringed valance that falls to the floor. The Knole form was revived with great enthusiasm in Edwardian and early 20th-century English country-house interiors, where its enveloping silhouette was prized for grand reception rooms and libraries. This interpretation brings that same presence into the modern home.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is built from Romanian solid redwood (moisture content below 10%), mortise-and-tenon jointed for structural integrity across decades of use. Each of the four corner post finials is individually hand-carved and finished in an antiqued gold patina — the pinecone motif is a classical symbol of hospitality and longevity, entirely at home in the Knole tradition. The upholstery fabric is a substantial sage green damask woven with ivory floral cartouches, its weight and drape suited to the generous scale of the piece. The fixed back and sides are fully padded and upholstered as a single sculptural unit. The seat cushion is high-density foam for sustained comfort. The fringed valance is constructed in coordinating olive-green with hanging bullion tassels and bead drops — a detail that requires dozens of hours of skilled hand-finishing.
