Design & Inspiration

A room changes the moment this screen enters it. Unfolded to its full 150 cm width, the three-panel paravant draws the eye upward through a rhythm of shaped crests, open cane roundels, and button-tufted velvet panels — a composition that makes the act of dividing space feel like an act of decoration. This piece draws from the design vocabulary of the Louis XV Rococo period, when the paravent evolved from a purely functional object into one of the most theatrically expressive pieces in a French salon or chambre de parade.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is hand-carved from solid pine, finished with a hand-rubbed honey oak patina that allows the grain to breathe through the surface — warm, natural, and deliberately understated so the carved ornament can speak. Each panel features an arched cane roundel in the upper section, woven in the traditional French hexagonal cannage pattern, framed by bold C-scrolls and a leaf-carved rope border. The lower panels are upholstered in beige velvet with deep capitonné buttoning — a disciplined grid of diamond tufts that gives the fabric both visual depth and structural tension. The central panel's upper crest carries a carved cartouche flanked by asymmetric scrollwork and an acanthus plume — the single detail that anchors the entire composition to the Louis XV Rococo vocabulary. Hinged connections between panels allow the screen to fold flat or be angled to any position.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this screen is produced by hand in Egypt by craftsmen trained in classical European joinery and upholstery techniques. The carving is executed with hand gouges before finishing — not routed or machine-stamped. The cane panels are hand-woven and set into shaped frames. The capitonné tufting is hand-stitched with individual buttons pulled through the velvet at measured intervals. Brass & Wood oversees every stage of production to ensure the finished piece is faithful to the Rococo tradition it honors. Customization in fabric color and finish is available on request.
