Marble-Top Bedside Commode in Antique Ivory and Gilt

A bow-fronted bedside commode topped with a slab of veined white marble, set behind a carved gallery crest that rises at the back like a small crown. Below the marble sits a shaped drawer and, under it, a curved cabinet door dressed with a hand-carved garland tied at both sides with ribbon bows. Fluted pilasters run down the front corners and finish in carved feet, and the antique ivory lacquer is highlighted along every raised edge with a soft gilt patina that lifts the garland, the crest and the flutes out of the pale ground.

The cool marble is cut and polished to follow the bowed front exactly, while the crest, garland and pilasters are carved by hand before the lacquer is laid down and the gilding rubbed into the carving alone. Handcrafted by Brass & Wood in Egypt, it takes a lamp, a carafe or a small arrangement without concern for heat or water, and pairs naturally with a carved bed in a classic master bedroom.
