Design & Inspiration

There is a particular richness to the Napoleon III aesthetic that no other European period quite replicates: the deliberate layering of deep jewel-toned ground colours beneath extravagant gilt metal mounts, as though the object itself is dressed for the occasion. This footed compote draws directly from that Second Empire vocabulary — the deep wine-burgundy ceramic body, the peach-toned painted floral cartouche at the centre, and the exuberant gilt brass scroll handles that rise and cascade on either side like theatre curtains mid-performance. It is a piece designed to be looked at as much as used.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The bowl is formed from high-fired ceramic, finished in a deep wine glaze that graduates subtly toward the gilded rim. The interior is finished in a contrasting warm blush, creating a visual depth that draws the eye inward. The central cartouche panel is hand-painted with a naturalistic floral cluster — roses and petals rendered with the loose, confident brushwork characteristic of Napoleon III decorative porcelain. The gilt brass mounts are cast individually: the twin scroll handles feature acanthus-and-blossom relief work at their crown, while a looped bow finial sits at the apex of the handle arch. The turned pedestal foot rises from a stepped square base dressed in gilt brass banding — a detail that grounds the whole composition and recalls the ormolu-mounted guéridon tables of the 1860s Parisian interior.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every piece in the Brass & Wood collection is produced by Egyptian artisans trained in the classical European tradition. The ceramic body is kiln-fired and hand-glazed; the brass mounts are cast, hand-chased, and finished in your chosen metal tone. No two pieces are absolutely identical — the hand-painted cartouche ensures each compote carries a trace of the maker's hand. Customisation of the brass finish is available on request.
