Venetian Rococo Lacquered Wood Console - Royal Blue Gold Leaf Carved Mirror
Design & Inspiration
Enter a room anchored by this piece and the first thing you register is colour — a deep, saturated royal blue that reads as unmistakably Venetian. The gilded scrollwork that erupts from every rail, apron, and corner bracket catches the light as only hand-carved gesso work can, pulling gold out of shadow and throwing warmth across whatever stands before it. At 220 cm tall, the mirror does not simply hang on the wall — it commands the entire vertical register of the hallway, drawing the eye upward to the pierced shell-and-cartouche crest before drawing it back down to the warm beige marble top below. This is the console and mirror pairing in the Venetian Rococo tradition: theatre and function in equal measure, faithfully reproduced for the modern entrance hall.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame of both console and mirror is constructed from Romanian solid redwood dried to below 10% humidity — a specification chosen precisely because dimensional stability underpins every carved detail. The deep teal-blue ground is a lacquered painted finish, applied in layered coats and lightly distressed at the raised profiles to reveal the gilded edge beneath. Over this ground, an entire vocabulary of Rococo ornament has been carved by hand: C-scrolls and S-scrolls at the mirror's corners, a dense acanthus-and-shell crest at the apex, beaded inner moulding tracing the mirror's arched perimeter, and a richly carved apron centred on a large rosette flanked by acanthus leaves on the console body. The cabriole legs, curving outward with confidence before pulling back to a pad foot, are gilded along their inner faces — a detail visible only when the piece is approached directly, and one that rewards the eye of someone who looks closely. The console top is dressed in a slab of warm beige-veined marble, its natural patterning providing a counterpoint to the carved drama below.
Dimensions & Details
Width: 140 cm / Depth: 41 cm / Height: 220 cm
The demi-lune (half-moon) console top projects gracefully from the wall, keeping the depth to a hallway-friendly 41 cm while the 140 cm width provides full visual presence. The mirror accounts for the upper portion of the 220 cm overall height, meaning the marble surface sits at a practical display and arrangement height. The piece is delivered as a console unit and a separate mirror panel; minimal assembly — securing the mirror to the console back — is required on site.
Handcrafted in Egypt
Every element of this console and mirror set is produced by hand in Brass & Wood's Cairo workshops, by craftsmen trained in the European gilded furniture tradition. The layered lacquer finish, the hand-carved gesso ornament, the gold leaf application, and the marble top cutting and fitting are all carried out as individual operations — each inspected before the next begins. Romanian solid redwood, selected for its tight grain and low moisture content, forms the structural core. The result is a piece that carries the visual authority of a Venetian palazzo reception room into any modern entrance hall, corridor, or formal reception space.
