Empire Verde Marble Column Pedestal with Gilt Corinthian Capital & Urn Mounts
Design & Inspiration
Place this column in a room and the room reorganizes itself around it. The fluted verde antique marble shaft rises with the quiet authority of a Roman atrium column — deep green veining catching light differently at every hour of the day, the gilt Corinthian capital blazing at the top like a small crown. This pedestal is faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the French Empire period (1800–1830), when architects Percier and Fontaine drew directly from Greco-Roman antiquity to furnish Napoleon's palaces. The Corinthian order — the most ornate of the three classical orders — was the Empire's preferred vocabulary for pieces meant to carry sculptural weight, both literally and visually.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The shaft is turned from genuine verde marble — a stone prized since antiquity for its deep forest-green ground laced with pale veining — and hand-fluted to replicate the classical column's defining vertical rhythm. At its neck, a gilt brass ring collar transitions into the fully cast Corinthian capital, its acanthus leaves and volutes executed with the precision that separates a serious reproduction from a decorative approximation. The square plinth base is dressed in the same verde marble and carries a central gilt brass appliqué: a classical urn motif flanked by foliate sprays, cast and chased by hand. A secondary gilt brass band frames the base's lower register, providing visual closure to the composition. Every metal element is finished in warm 24-karat-tone gilding, chosen to complement the green marble's cool depth.
Dimensions & Details
Diameter: 30 cm / Height: 108 cm
The proportions are calibrated for a standard room height: tall enough to elevate a sculptural bust, vase, or floral arrangement to eye level, yet slender enough to stand in a corner or flank a doorway without overpowering the space. The flat square top platform provides a stable, level surface for display objects up to approximately 28 cm in diameter.
Handcrafted in Egypt
This column pedestal is handcrafted in Egypt by artisans working in the tradition of European classical stonework and bronze casting. Each piece is individually finished — no two columns will carry identical veining, making every pedestal genuinely unique. Brass & Wood sources marble with the specific colorway and veining density required to meet the visual standard of the original Empire-period prototypes. The result is a display column that earns its place in a formal salon, a grand hallway, or a reception room where first impressions matter.
