Napoleon III Velvet Curved Canapé Sofa - Diamond Tufting and Tassel Fringe Skirt
Design & Inspiration
There is a particular kind of sofa that does not wait to be noticed — it arrives. The sweeping crescent silhouette of this canapé, upholstered from arm-cap to floor hem in silver-grey velvet, commands its corner of a room the moment it is placed. This is a faithful interpretation of the Napoleon III Second Empire canapé tradition (1852–1870), when Parisian upholsterers competed to produce the most lavishly dressed seating forms ever conceived. The era's defining obsession — concealing the frame entirely beneath layers of fabric, passementerie, and ornamental trim — finds full expression here.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The body is built on a structural frame of Romanian solid redwood, seasoned to below ten percent humidity for dimensional stability. Every surface is then wrapped in a silver-grey velvet of consistent pile density, and the curved back is worked entirely in diamond capitonné — the deep button-tufting that pulls the fabric into precise geometric relief across the full serpentine arc. The seat border and arm facing carry an embroidered passementerie band woven in a repeating rope-and-knot motif — a close-up of the fabric reveals hand-knotted cord intersections of considerable intricacy. Below this band, the full-length skirt falls in dense, even pleats and terminates in a double row of twisted tassel fringe, each tassel individually knotted and pendant. No leg is exposed. The piece reads as pure textile architecture.
Dimensions & Details
Available in multiple seating capacities to suit the scale of your reception room. Reference dimensions: Width: 300 cm / Depth: 118 cm / Height: 90 cm (4-person variant as shown). The generous depth and low back height create the characteristic Second Empire profile — wide enough to receive a formal gathering, low enough to remain visually open in a grand room.
Handcrafted in Egypt
Produced in the Brass & Wood atelier in Egypt by upholsterers trained in classical European passementerie and capitonné techniques. Each tassel is knotted by hand; each button depression is individually tensioned. The result is a piece that honors the labour-intensive tradition of the Parisian maison de tapissier — brought into reach without compromise on the methods that define it. Country of origin: Egypt.
