Design & Inspiration

Place this guéridon at the end of a sofa or beside a reading chair, and it immediately anchors the room with the authority of a Parisian salon. The oval form, the jewel-like marquetry top encircled by a pierced brass gallery, the slender cabriole legs tapering to antique-gold sabots — every proportion tells you this table was designed to be looked at as much as used. It faithfully reproduces the French table ambulante tradition that reached its height during the Napoleon III / Second Empire period, when Parisian cabinetmakers combined Rococo Revival curves with the industrial-age precision of machine-cut veneer panels, resulting in pieces of almost lapidary intricacy.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The oval top is veneered in a complex floral marquetry composition — scrolling acanthus, ribbon-tied bouquets, and central medallion — executed in contrasting light and dark fruitwood veneers laid over a solid Romanian redwood substrate dried to below 10% humidity for dimensional stability. The circumference is crowned by a pierced brass gallery in a repeating geometric fretwork pattern, soldered and finished in antique gold. Four ormolu-cast mounts at the apron corners — each a stylized foliate drop — are characteristic of Second Empire bronze-dressing on salon furniture. The four cabriole legs are hand-shaped and finished in a deep French-polish lacquer that reveals the wood's natural grain beneath a mirror surface. Antique-gold brass sabots cap each foot. The lower oval shelf, connected by the stretcher structure, repeats the marquetry vocabulary with a sunburst-and-floral medallion composition, edged in a fine brass stringing line.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 53 cm / Depth: 40 cm / Height: 75 cm
The proportions place the top surface at a height comfortable alongside standard sofa and armchair seat heights. The oval footprint (53 × 40 cm) provides a generous surface without intruding on foot traffic. The lower shelf adds practical storage or display space for books, a tray, or decorative objects.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this table — the marquetry cutting, the brass gallery fabrication, the ormolu-style mount casting, the French-polish finish — is executed by hand in Brass & Wood's Egyptian workshops. Egyptian marquetry craftsmanship has deep roots; the tradition of wood inlay was practiced in the Nile Valley centuries before it became fashionable in Versailles. This piece channels that heritage into the vocabulary of 19th-century French cabinet-making, producing a table that would not look out of place in a Haussmann-era Parisian apartment or a contemporary collector's salon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is this table made from?

The frame and top substrate are Romanian solid redwood (below 10% humidity). The decorative surface is multi-species fruitwood marquetry veneer. The gallery, sabots, and decorative mounts are cast and finished antique-gold brass. All joinery is hand-assembled.

Is assembly required?

Minimal assembly is required — typically attaching the legs to the top and lower shelf. Full illustrated instructions are included, and the process takes under 30 minutes with standard tools.

Can this table be customized?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customization of brass finish tone (gold, antique gold, bronze), wood stain depth, and marquetry pattern selection on orders placed in advance. Please contact our team for consultation before placing your order.
