Design & Inspiration

The Gothic Revival movement of the mid-nineteenth century did something that few decorative currents have managed before or since: it took the visual grammar of medieval cathedrals — pointed arches, quatrefoil tracery, slender vertical columns — and translated it directly into drawing-room furniture. The result was a chair that carries genuine architectural authority without requiring a vaulted ceiling above it. This salon armchair is faithfully reproduced in that tradition, its side panels reading as miniature cathedral windows brought into the domestic interior.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is constructed from Romanian solid redwood at under 10% humidity, turned and jointed by hand. Four corner posts rise from the seat rail to the top rail, each turned with ball bosses at the joints — a detail lifted directly from medieval timber construction, where structural nodes were marked by ornamental swellings. The side panels are the defining element: a repeating composition of gilt-finished quatrefoils linked by vertical bars, each bar chamfered along its profile to catch light, over a bottom row of pointed-arch openings that echo the lancet windows of Gothic stonework. Every unit is individually shaped and gilt-finished in a matte gold tone that reads as carved enrichment rather than applied decoration. The four straight legs are finished with faceted gilt sabot feet, grounding the chair with the same matte gold register as the lattice above. Two loose cushions — a generous seat pad and a deep back cushion — are upholstered in solid beige velvet with crisp piped edges. The outer back and rear half of each side are finished as flat upholstered box panels, completing the enclosed, architectural quality of the form.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every component of this armchair is handcrafted in Egypt by artisans trained in classical European joinery and ornamental carving. The turning work on the corner posts, the gilt finishing of the lattice panels, and the precision piping of the velvet cushions are executed by hand in the Brass & Wood workshops. Gothic Revival furniture demands structural clarity above all else — each element must read cleanly from across a room — and that discipline governs every stage of production here.
