Régence Demilune Commode — Burl Marquetry, Rose Marble Top & Antique Gold Ormolu Mounts
Design & Inspiration
Set a demilune commode against any wall and something shifts in the room — the half-moon silhouette softens the architecture, the rose marble top catches whatever light falls on it, and the whole piece announces that someone in this space has considered more than mere storage. This commode is faithfully reproduced in the tradition of the French Régence period (1715–1730), the brief and exquisite transition between the grandeur of Louis XIV and the playfulness of Louis XV Rococo. The Régence cabinetmaker's signature move was to take the heavy Baroque form and coax it into something lighter, more animated — and the demilune commode is perhaps the most elegant proof of that instinct.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The body is built from a solid wood core dressed in a considered arrangement of figured burl veneer panels framed by tight crossband stringing — alternating warm walnut tones with a linear precision that reads as controlled luxury. The two bow-fronted drawers follow the curved form perfectly, their fronts shaped to maintain the uninterrupted half-moon sweep. The top is a single slab of natural rose marble, veined in blush and cream, its flat rear edge aligned flush with the straight back of the piece. Four slender cabriole legs — the Régence lightening of the Baroque column — terminate in cast antique gold ormolu sabots that grip the floor with quiet authority. Flanking the drawer stacks on either side, paired ormolu mounts in a scrolled foliate pattern provide the period's characteristic ornamental punctuation, and a shaped ormolu apron mount at the lower center completes the composition. The finish across the wood surfaces is a hand-rubbed French polish, building depth in the burl grain without obscuring the natural figure of the wood.

Handcrafted in Egypt
Every commode that leaves the Brass & Wood workshop is the product of hands that understand the difference between cutting a curve and carving one. The burl marquetry is laid and pressed panel by panel; the ormolu mounts are individually cast and hand-fitted; the marble top is selected for consistent veining and cut to the demilune profile. This is not assembly-line production — it is the measured work of craftspeople who treat European historical furniture as a living discipline, not a historical footnote. Each piece carries a delivery lead time of 45–60 days because it cannot be rushed.
