Design & Inspiration

This three-panel folding screen occupies a room the way a garden painting occupies a wall — with quiet authority and layered pleasure. The lower panels carry hand-painted oil compositions of roses, lilies, and trailing botanicals rising from a soft ground of sage green and pale yellow, with a dragonfly and a bird sketched into the upper reaches. The upper panels are fitted with fine diagonal cane weave set within shaped cartouche frames, allowing light to filter through while maintaining privacy. The result is a screen that breathes — part painting, part architecture, entirely Rococo.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The frame is built from solid pine dried to below 10% humidity, ensuring dimensional stability in any climate. Every length of the frame is shaped into the fluid, asymmetric curves that define Louis XV Rococo cabinetry — no straight line survives for long. The ivory lacquered finish is applied in multiple coats and burnished smooth, then edged throughout with antique gold gilding that follows the carved C-scrolls, shell motifs, and acanthus crests. The central crest above the tallest panel is a carved knot of scrolling foliage and ribbons — the kind of decorative summit that would have crowned a boiserie panel in a Versailles petite apartment. Each painted lower panel is an individual oil composition applied directly to the prepared wood surface, with colours blended across all three panels to read as a continuous garden scene when the screen is fully opened. The cane inserts in the upper panels are hand-woven and fitted within their carved frames with brass pins at the corners.

Dimensions & Details

Width: 145 cm / Height: 190 cm
Three hinged panels, each approximately 48 cm wide. Folds flat for storage or repositioning. The screen stands independently when opened at a shallow angle.

Handcrafted in Egypt

Every element of this screen — the frame shaping, the carving, the gilding, the lacquerwork, and the oil painting — is executed by hand in the Brass & Wood workshops in Egypt. The painted panels are the work of trained decorative artists who work in the French 18th-century tradition of vernis Martin and painted boiserie. No two screens are identical: the flower compositions vary naturally between pieces, making each one a singular work. Brass & Wood offers customisation of the ground colour, gilding tone, and painted motif for clients who wish to commission a screen to specific interiors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is this screen made from?

The frame is solid pine with an ivory lacquered finish and antique gold hand-gilded edges. The upper panels feature hand-woven cane inserts; the lower panels carry hand-painted oil floral compositions applied directly to the wood surface.

Is assembly required?

Minimal assembly is required — the three panels arrive hinged and need only to be unfolded and positioned. No tools are necessary.

Can the painted design or colour be customised?

Yes. Brass & Wood offers customisation of the background ground colour, the gilding finish, and the painted motif. Please contact our team with your interior requirements before placing your order.
