Louis XVI Neoclassical Mahogany Bergère Armchair - Gilt Acanthus Crest & Light Blue Damask
Design & Inspiration
Place this bergère in a room and the proportions do the talking. The straight rectangular back, the enclosed upholstered sides, the disciplined verticality of the fluted tapered legs — every line draws from the Louis XVI Neoclassical vocabulary that defined Parisian taste in the decades before the Revolution. This is a chair designed not merely for sitting, but for being seen seated: the frame is as much the statement as the fabric it holds.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is built from Romanian solid redwood finished to a rich mahogany tone using a hand-rubbed, polished treatment that brings out the depth of the mahogany tone. Carved gilt elements — the ribboned foliate acanthus crest at the top rail, the rope-twist moulding edging the back frame, the leaf-capped arm supports, the square paterae at each leg block, and the collared moulding along the seat rail — are executed in carved wood with an applied gilt finish, giving the chair its warmth without the weight of metal mounts. The upholstery pairs a plain light blue satin on the back and inside arms with a large-scale gold-on-light-blue damask on the seat cushion; a matching rectangular lumbar cushion in the same damask completes the composition. The four fluted tapered legs each terminate in a gilt collar and a small turned toupie foot. The outer side panels are diamond-quilted in the same light blue satin, and every upholstered edge is finished with a cream gimp braid.
