Napoleon III Capitonné Velvet Sofa - Damask Panels and Fringe Skirt
Design & Inspiration
There are sofas that furnish a room, and there are sofas that define it. This capitonné sofa, faithfully reproduced in the tradition of Napoleon III / Second Empire design (1852–1870), belongs firmly to the second category. The deep button-tufted seat and back, the floor-length twisted bullion fringe skirt in blue-grey tones, and the woven damask panels at the outer arms come together to create a piece that does not merely sit in a room — it presides over it. Napoleon III's court demanded interiors that were theatrical without being careless, and this sofa answers that demand in every proportion and detail.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The primary upholstery is a rich navy blue velvet, hand-cut and applied to achieve the disciplined geometry of true capitonné tufting — each button set at an equal depth to produce the signature diamond grid across seat, back, and inner arms. The outer arm panels are dressed in a contrasting woven damask, its gold-and-navy foliate motif drawn directly from the Second Empire's love of textile opulence. The base is finished with a generously proportioned twisted bullion fringe skirt in blue-grey tones that sweeps to the floor, concealing the frame completely and lending the silhouette its unmistakable grandeur. The internal frame is built from Romanian Solid Redwood seasoned to below 10% humidity, ensuring structural integrity across decades.
