Transition-Era Mahogany Guéridon with Crema Marfil Marble Top & Ormolu Mounts
Design & Inspiration
Set a guéridon like this in the corner of a salon and it commands attention the way a well-dressed figure at the edge of a room does — quietly, precisely. This round side table is drawn from the French Transition period (circa 1760–1780), the fascinating decade when the S-curves of Rococo began to straighten into the clarity of Neoclassicism, yet the craftsmen's love of ornament had not yet relented. The cabriole legs still curve with Rococo memory, but the fluted leg panels and the symmetrical placement of the ormolu mounts signal what was coming: the discipline of Louis XVI. The result is a piece of singular elegance — the best of two worlds, frozen at the exact moment they met.
Materials & Craftsmanship
The frame is hand-carved from solid mahogany, finished in a deep mahogany high-gloss lacquer that gives the wood a mirror-like warmth. Every ormolu mount — the floral garland swags on the apron, the central porcelain-medallion cartouche, the leaf-capped angle mounts on the legs, the foliate sabots at the feet, and the extraordinarily detailed gilt lattice basket on the lower stretcher — is cast and hand-finished in gold-tone brass. The tabletop is set with a full round of Crema Marfil marble, its warm beige ground and subtle veining providing a natural counterpoint to the richness of the brass and wood beneath it. This is handcrafted furniture: no element is machine-stamped, no mount is merely applied. Each is positioned with the intention of a craftsman who understands proportion.
Dimensions & Details
Diameter: 50 cm / Height: 82 cm
The guéridon's slender profile at 50 cm diameter makes it perfectly suited as a lamp table, drinks side table, or occasional reading table beside an armchair. At 82 cm height it aligns naturally with the arm of a classic upholstered chair. The lower-tier gilt basket stretcher adds both visual balance and functional display surface — for a small vase, a book, or an incense burner.
Handcrafted in Egypt
Every piece in the Brass & Wood collection is produced in Egypt by artisans trained in classical European joinery and bronze finishing. The guéridon tradition — the small, richly decorated stand-table that accompanied French aristocratic life in salons, boudoirs, and bedchambers — is faithfully honoured here, with materials and methods that respect the original design vocabulary. Each table is made to order, allowing for customisation of marble type, brass finish, and wood tone to suit your interior.
